Oh, priceless. Their poses make this look like a promo shot for a reality show: “Real Live Cops of Coney Island,” or something.

    Thanks Joe.

Did you have to recite that it’s not illegal to take photos in transit stations before you asked to shoot their photo? This is beautiful. It says so much: their stance and presence so strong and evident (via the high-contrast set-up), but we can’t see their faces. Everyday we see these cops around, feel their presence, but hardly ever take a second glance and see them for their individual selves. The badges are fantastic.

I lifted the camera to my, shot a few frames, and kept moving. No permission asked for or received. A dialog with one cop once, though, ended this way: “I didn’t ask you want the law was. I told you to stop taking pictures.”

It’s SAD to say, but it’s NEVER a good idea to have a dialog with a Police Officer. One can talk, and have a conversation. But telling the Officer the Law is never a good idea. The Officer knows the law as it is stated below. Sec 1050.9 ( c )

If you are prepared to stand your ground, you can ask for a “Boss” (a Sgt. etc. ) to respond, . You will be detained and made “safe” patted down, and maybe handcuffed for the safety of the Police Officer. This can take a while, and you might even be removed to a sub station to await the arrival of a supervisor. What a waste of time, both for you and for the NYPD. You can also call 311 and explain what just happened. They have a hard job, but the law is their guide.
I take it that you travel alone when taking pictures ? It always helps when someone is watching what is going on, be it a friend, or just another citizen etc.
    Be careful and good luck.
Your an artist. and I would miss seeing the shots that you could not take because of a overzealous Police Officer.

section 1050.9(c). which states “Photography, filming or video recording in any facility or conveyance is permitted except that ancillary equipment such as lights, reflectors or tripods may not be used. Members of the press holding valid identification issued by the New York City Police Department are hereby authorized to use necessary ancillary equipment. All photographic activity must be conducted in accordance with the provision of these Rules. Also, some details about a ban which had been proposed but never approved.
