He looks like Jerry Lee Lewis performing Great Balls of Fire. Awesome Joe!

Playing inside a piano is nothing new.
Best example is Stephen Scott’s pieces for “bowed piano”. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14jPvnWhdNM
But Shinners seems to be standing INSIDE the piano, which means they had to do some radical surgery on that poor Bechstein.
I think that crosses the line. The rule is (or should be) “do no harm”.
Regardless, I’d love to have heard what it sounded like.

The artists cut a hole all the way through the Bechstein, the lid, strings, and all. More at the Moma site: http://bit.ly/hJk6Lr
And I don’t know if the performances were recorded (there were several different arrangements).

Is that Sofia in the background? If yes, I see that she carries a camera, dangerous habits!

That is Sophia — nowadays she’s carrying her Fuji instant camera, and she took her own photo of the performer…

Good picture. The grain gives it a newspaper feel.
He doesn’t seem to loose his concentration despite the crowd moving so close to him. Unusual setting for classical piano players.
John Cage is known for his prepared piano music (but I don’t think he ever got inside a piano as such). I’m happy to see that someone else steps in too, prepared piano music I mean.

Ah, nice shot! I saw this exhibition back in mid december when I was in NYC, but with other musicians performing.
