Fireworks would totally spoil this scene. Love this photo!

Beautiful sky over our beautiful sister NYC. On Saturday my family was up on the roof top garden of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The sky was spectacular…wish you and your machine had been there Joe.

The sky was unparalleled that night, Joe, no lie. I took a similar photo (with a crappy cell phone camera so it doesn’t compare) from a friend’s terrace on 11th Avenue while waiting for the fireworks to begin. I kept looking aorund at my friends and saying “I think the fireworks have started already!”

A great shot – I’m glad you caught it! I was thinking “I can’t wait to see what Joe’s photo of that sky looks like.”

Isn’t that the (formerly) Freedom tower in the center? Just to the left of Frank Ghery’s new building??

  • Joseph O. Holmes July 7, 2011, 11:13 am

Two cranes mark the top of 1 WTC. Ghery’s new building, 8 Spruce Street, is the tallest building in the center, to the right of the Woolworth Building. The tower of the Manhattan Municipal Building is right next to the ugly Verizon building, next to the tower of the Brooklyn Bridge. And the building with the beautiful top in the left half of the photo is 70 Pine Street.

    Beautiful shot Joe!

When I was a child my parents moved us to Hollis, Queens (from E. 96th). I recall my dad driving us back into the city to visit and smelling the river as we approached the TriBorough Bridge and excitedly exclaiming about the wonderful (familiar) smell of ‘my beautiful East River.’ My 84 year old mother still teases me about this…50 years later.
