I’m in my 60s and still get teased about a comment I made as a child: We still lived in Manhattan and had been out on LI for the day, visiting relatives. On our way home I remarked to my mother that I knew we were almost home when I could smell “My beautiful East River.” The family has teased me about it for years, but that brackish scent, of salt and fresh waters and of wetlands is still on my list of the best smells ever…
